The social structure in Medieval Europe was very different to today. People were born into different classes, most finding themselves stuck in that class.
Kings were on top of the social structure. They ruled all of their kingdom, making laws their people had to abide by. They distributed their land among the next class, the nobles who then looked after the land.
Nobles, sometimes known as lords, had a lot of power in the kingdom. They ruled the peasants, who worked on their land. In return for the land they were given, nobles were very loyal to their Kings.
Knights fought for their kingdom in battles between different kingdoms and invaders. They were ruled by nobles and were an honourable member of the kingdom.
Peasants were at the bottom of the social structure. They worked for nobles, growing crops to make food and working on the land. In return for their work and loyalty they gained protection from the King as well as being fed.
