Charlemagne was a very famous king in Europe. He became King of the Franks, in 768 CE when he was quite young, only 26. This was as his father had passed away. Charlemagne wasn't your average king. He didn't like to sit around, having others work for him, he liked to be involved.
He was a successful warrior who was the leader of his men. He won many of his battles and gained lots of land for his people. Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the Romans when he was visiting Rome in 800 CE. This title earned him lots of respect, although the title gained him no more power than he already had.
He actually didn't die in any battles, he died when he was in his seventies, of old age. To live to that age in medieval times was a huge achievement, as most people died in their forties. When he died in 814 CE, his son Louis the Pious took over the empire.
