Feasts differed, depending on the social class of the person having it. Wealthy people like
nobles and kings used to have extravagant feasts that cost a lot of money.
Peasants were well fed as it was essential that they were strong and able to work in the fields. Although peasants always had enough food, their diet consisted of simple foods such as eggs, bread, wheat, oats, turnips, ale and cheese. These foods were all pretty cheap and easy to obtain.
Nobles were also fed well. However, they held huge feasts when guests came to stay, with usually many different courses. Food that was served up during feasts included fish, fresh fruit, dried fruit and vegetables. Dessert was even served after mains, generally sweetened by honey, as sugar was not yet available. Most food from the middle ages was preserved in salt, to prevent it from going off. There was barely any cutlery available, apart from knives, so most food was eaten with your fingers.
